Kite Surfing

If you like playing with the wind and waves, it’s high time you discovered kite surfing, an extreme sport that’s gained huge popularity in recent years at the beaches of Attica and many Greek islands where winds are strong enough to impress any kite surfer.

Kite surfing began in France; from there it spread and became world-famous through American practitioners in Hawaii. Windsurfers went mad over this new sport; it made its first appearance in the waters of the Aegean and Ionian seas in around 1998. One of the best beaches in Greece for kite surfing is Agios Ioannis on the island of Lefkada, where the winds are ideal. Every afternoon, the mistral arrives punctually for its appointment with the kite surfers. Kite surf races are held there every summer, with participants from Greece and around the world. The sky fills with colourful kites that create amazing patterns. Kite surfers can also be found in Drepano in Patras, and on the islands of Paros, Naxos and Rhodes. Kite surfing spots in Attica include Varkiza, Loutsa, Anavyssos and the beach of Schinias.
